According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau collected between 2020 and 2023, nine of the top 10 fastest growing cities in the U.S. were located in Texas. The population growth in counties in Texas is largely driven by residents moving into the state from other parts of the U.S. and factors such as birth rates and death rates. The city of Celina, Texas, experienced the largest population increase during this period, growing by 143% to a population of 43,317 as of July 2023. Residents in Celina generally rated the city positively in terms of quality of life and economic health.
While the South experienced the fastest population growth in the U.S. in 2023, with more than 1.4 million people added to the region, New York saw a decline in its population as more than half a million people left the state in 2022. Overall, the South region, consisting of 16 states and Washington, D.C., has been growing steadily since 2018 due to both domestic and international migration. This growth has made the South the most populous region in the U.S. with 130.1 million residents as of 2023.
