Following an outbreak of listeria, Boar’s Head Provisions Co. announced a voluntary recall of 7 million pounds of deli meats produced at its Central Virginia facility. The recall comes after the detection of the bacteria in a sample taken at the production site. The affected products were distributed nationwide and have expiration dates ranging from January 1, 2022, to January 3, 2023.

Listeria monocytogenes is a type of bacteria that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in individuals with weakened immune systems, as well as pregnant women, young children, and the elderly. Symptoms of listeriosis include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues.

The recall has sparked concern among consumers, as the affected deli meats are commonly found in sandwiches and other food items served at delis and restaurants. Boar’s Head has advised customers who have purchased the recalled products to either throw them away or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.

This is not the first time Boar’s Head has had to recall products due to listeria contamination. In 2019, the company recalled over 23,000 pounds of ready-to-eat ham products for the same reason. The recent recall underscores the importance of proper food safety measures in manufacturing facilities to prevent such outbreaks.

In response to the recall, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an investigation into the Central Virginia facility to determine the source of the contamination and prevent future incidents. Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and freezers for the affected products and to take appropriate precautions to avoid consuming contaminated food.
