Overnight, hundreds of people in central Colorado were evacuated due to a wildfire, the Quarry Fire, that rapidly grew to 100 acres in just a few hours. The blaze was discovered by a deputy in Jefferson County, southwest of Denver, and quickly spread, prompting evacuation orders for nearly 600 homes. This is just one of several wildfires impacting Colorado, with the Alexander Mountain Fire quadrupling in size near Loveland and the Stone Canyon Fire forcing evacuations in Boulder, Larimer, and Lyons Counties. Both fires remain 0% contained as of Tuesday night.

Additionally, the fifth largest wildfire in California history, the Park Fire, has caused over 25,000 evacuations and destroyed more than 165 structures in four northern counties. The fire began near Chico when Ronnie Dean Stout II allegedly pushed his mother’s burning car into a gully, resulting in charges of reckless arson. The fire is one of 89 large active wildfires across the West, with experts attributing the increase in wildfires to climate change and hotter, drier conditions in the region.

As fires continue to devastate communities across the West, authorities are working to contain the blazes and keep residents safe. The impact of these fires on both the environment and local communities highlights the urgent need for action to address climate change and prevent future destructive wildfires.
