Vice President Kamala Harris has made history as the 2024 Democratic presidential nominee, becoming the first Black woman and first Asian American from a major party to receive the designation. Harris secured the nomination on Friday afternoon, receiving at least 2,530 votes from her party’s delegates. She will officially accept the nomination next week and look forward to the Democratic National Convention. Harris, who quickly gained the backing of top Democratic leaders, will face Republican nominee Donald Trump in November. The DNC began a virtual roll call for delegates to vote for Harris on Thursday, with voting to conclude on Monday. Harris is expected to announce her vice presidential candidate shortly and begin campaigning in several states next week. The race between Harris and Trump is heating up, with Trump making racist remarks towards Harris and facing increased attacks from GOP allies. Harris has been labeled a “DEI candidate” by conservatives, who are using diversity, equity, and inclusion as a way to disqualify people of color and women in positions of power. Additionally, a video resurfaced of Sen. JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, making derogatory comments about Harris. Despite the attacks, Harris remains focused on her campaign and making history as a groundbreaking Democratic nominee.
