Secretaries of state from five U.S. states are urging Elon Musk to fix the AI chatbot on his social media platform X, which has been spreading misinformation related to the November 5 election. Concerns have been raised about the spread of misinformation and conspiracy theories on social media platforms, especially in the lead-up to the presidential and congressional elections. Musk, who acquired the platform in 2022, has been accused of allowing hate speech and misinformation due to reduced content moderation.
The Secretaries of State from Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Washington, Michigan, and New Mexico have sent an open letter to Musk calling for immediate changes to the AI search assistant, Grok, to ensure accurate information for voters. They cited an incident where the chatbot falsely claimed Vice President Kamala Harris had missed the ballot deadline in nine states, which was proven to be incorrect.
Musk had previously announced that Grok would be available to all premium subscribers of X, but the officials pointed out that its misinformation was still shared with millions of people on social media. They recommended directing Grok users to CanIVote.org for accurate information on U.S. elections.
The social media platform X has not yet responded to the letter from the Secretaries of State. Critics are concerned that misinformation spread on social media platforms could mislead voters and impact elections.
