Abbas suggests Ismail Haniyeh’s assassination intended to prolong Gaza war: Israel-Palestine conflict updates

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has condemned Israel for the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, calling it a cowardly act that will negatively impact truce talks in Gaza. Abbas plans to discuss the conflict with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a visit to Moscow from August 12 to 14. He will also visit Turkey from August 14 to 15.

Haniyeh was killed in Tehran last week, prompting threats of revenge on Israel and concerns of a wider Middle East war. Iran, a supporter of Hamas in its conflict with Israel, has blamed Israel for the assassination and promised harsh punishment in retaliation. Russian officials have condemned the killing and called for stability in the region.

In response to the escalating tensions, Russian security council secretary Sergei Shoigu held talks in Tehran with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Pezeshkian expressed a commitment to expanding ties with Russia, citing shared positions in promoting global security and peace.

Meanwhile, the US Department of State has expressed skepticism about Russia’s role in easing Middle East tensions, urging countries to discourage Iran from escalating the situation. Diplomatic pressure is growing to prevent further conflict between Iran and Israel. As international leaders navigate the delicate situation, concerns remain high about the potential for further violence and instability in the region.
