Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris has chosen Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate for the 2024 campaign. Walz was selected from a shortlist of contenders that included Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. Walz, who is 60 years old, was born in Nebraska and served in the National Guard for 24 years. He earned a social science degree and a Master of Science in educational leadership. Walz and his wife Gwen, who also taught at the same school, moved to Mankato in 1996. He served as a U.S. Representative for Minnesota’s first district before being elected as Minnesota’s 41st governor in 2019.
Harris, who is 59 years old, made history when she was sworn in as vice president in 2021 by becoming the first woman, first Black American, and first South Asian American to hold the role.
