Marine wildlife in California, including sea lions, suffering from domoic acid poisoning

A significant number of marine mammals, including sea lions, dolphins, and fur seals, have been found sick and disoriented in California in recent weeks. The Marine Mammal Center in San Luis Obispo County has responded to approximately 90 sea lions, three dolphins, and four fur seals showing symptoms consistent with domoic acid poisoning. The animals have been exhibiting disorientation, lethargy, and abnormal neurologic activity. Cases were initially reported in southern parts of the county but have since spread northward.

The high number of sick marine mammals is believed to be linked to a toxic algae bloom caused by warm summer temperatures and a marine heatwave in the Pacific. The algae produce a neurotoxin that accumulates in prey species such as small fish, which are then eaten by sea lions. Domoic acid poisoning can cause seizures, heart failure, and permanent brain damage if untreated.

The Marine Mammal Center has treated affected animals by flushing the toxin from their systems and providing medication. Domoic acid can also affect humans who consume contaminated seafood. The public has been advised to stay away from sick marine mammals and report any sightings to the appropriate authorities. The ocean has been deemed safe for swimming and surfing, as the illness does not spread among animals or to humans. Efforts are ongoing to monitor and address the situation, with public health departments issuing warnings about consuming seafood from affected areas.
