Protesters in Bangladesh pledge to ‘protect revolution’ by attacking supporters of Sheikh Hasina

Student protesters and political activists in Bangladesh have violently clashed with supporters of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, preventing them from reaching a memorial for her father, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The rally was held to mark the anniversary of Rahman’s assassination in a military coup in 1975.
Armed with bamboo sticks, iron rods, and pipes, the mob blocked the entrance to the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum, Hasina’s family home turned into a memorial for her father. Hasina, who recently resigned and fled to India, had called for supporters to gather at the site for a commemoration.
However, her opponents fear that Hasina’s supporters could create chaos, leading to clashes between the two groups. The interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has announced that the UN will investigate the “atrocities” committed during the protests that led to Hasina’s downfall.
Hasina’s government was accused of human rights abuses, including mass detentions and extrajudicial killings. Investigations into allegations of murders, genocide, and crimes against humanity by Hasina, her cabinet colleagues, and security officials have been launched.
The clashes in Dhaka showcase the deep political divide in Bangladesh, with both sides determined to protect their interests and ideologies. The UN investigation will shed light on the events leading up to Hasina’s ousting and the actions taken by her government during her time in power.
