Ex-Police Officer from Alabama Confesses to Drug Planting Scam

Former Alabama police officer Michael Kilgore has agreed to plead guilty to charges related to a scheme in which he planted drugs on innocent motorists to make drug arrests. Kilgore, who worked for the Centre Police Department, began the scheme in early January 2023 by offering a driver a chance to avoid drug charges by working for him, thus becoming a co-conspirator. Kilgore was arrested in May 2023 and fired from the department following an investigation that confirmed the allegations. In exchange for his guilty plea, Kilgore may face up to 20 years in prison and a financial penalty.

The scheme involved Kilgore and his co-conspirator planting drugs, including methamphetamine and marijuana, in vehicles during sham traffic stops. Kilgore would then “discover” the drugs and detain the victims for drug possession. The scheme was discovered when the co-conspirator reported it to law enforcement after purchasing drugs for another planned incident. Kilgore’s conduct was condemned by the Centre Police Chief, who stated that there was no excuse for any officer violating the law.

One of the victims targeted in the scheme has since sued Kilgore for wrongful arrest. The case highlights the abuse of power by law enforcement officers and the potential consequences for those involved in such schemes. Kilgore’s guilty plea and the investigation into his actions serve as examples of holding law enforcement officers accountable for misconduct.
