Vice President Kamala Harris outlined her inflation-battling economic agenda during an event in North Carolina, emphasizing plans to increase wages, help small business owners, and fight poverty. She plans to roll out more detailed proposals in the coming weeks to build an opportunity economy that benefits middle-class Americans. Harris proposed a federal ban on price gouging of food and groceries, tax credits for new parents and lower-income workers, and offering up to $25,000 to first-time homebuyers for down payments.
One key focus of Harris’ plan is addressing the housing shortage in America by building three million affordable homes and rentals by the end of her first term, ensuring they go to working and middle-class Americans rather than investors. She also plans to target artificially high rentals by cracking down on price-fixing software. Harris shared personal anecdotes to highlight her understanding of middle-class needs, citing her mother’s experience as a renter and her own time working at McDonald’s in college.
Harris criticized Donald Trump’s economic policies, particularly his proposed tariffs, which she described as a “national sales tax” that would raise prices for everyday goods imported by Americans. She accused Trump of not having serious plans to reduce costs for middle-class families or expand access to housing and healthcare. Harris countered Trump’s attacks by presenting her proposals as a more practical and compassionate approach to addressing economic challenges facing middle-class Americans.
