Veterans strongly criticized former President Donald Trump for his recent comments where he stated that the Presidential Medal of Freedom is “much better” than the military Medal of Honor because recipients of the latter are often badly wounded or dead. The Veterans of Foreign Wars and other lawmakers condemned Trump’s remarks, stating that they diminish the significance of the Medal of Honor and disrespect the sacrifices made by those who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.
Trump made the comments while discussing awarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Dr. Miriam Adelson, the widow of casino magnate Sheldon Adelson and a prominent Republican donor. While Trump’s campaign defended his comments as expressing the emotional difficulty of giving the Medal of Honor to wounded or deceased veterans, critics pointed out Trump’s history of disrespectful remarks towards military service members.
Sen. Jack Reed and the Kamala Harris campaign also criticized Trump’s comments, with Reed calling them a national embarrassment and highlighting the importance and significance of the Medal of Honor. Trump’s senior adviser pushed back, claiming Trump did more for veterans than the current administration.
Overall, the backlash against Trump’s comments underscores the deep respect and reverence that should be given to recipients of the Medal of Honor and the sacrifice they have made for their country.
