The Nigerian Medical Association has raised concerns over the kidnapping of 20 medical students from the universities of Jos and Maiduguri in Benue State. The students were reportedly on their way to an annual convention in Enugu when they were abducted. The NMA has called for swift action to secure the release of the students, who were traveling in a convoy of two buses when the incident occurred. Police and security agencies are working to locate and free the students, with ransom demands reportedly being made. Governor Hyacinth Alia has directed security agencies to intensify efforts to ensure the safe return of the abducted students. The national police have deployed advanced helicopters, drones, and specialized tactical vehicles to aid in the search for the victims. Kidnappings have been on the rise in Nigeria due to economic hardships, with many cases going unreported. Despite a law banning payments to kidnappers, families often feel forced to pay ransoms to secure the release of their loved ones. The NMA has vowed to continue efforts until the medical students are safely rescued.
