The University of Virginia community is mourning the loss of Roxane Gilmore, a Double Hoo alumna and former Virginia First Lady. Gilmore, who passed away recently, was known for her contributions to the university and the state of Virginia.
Gilmore earned a law degree from UVA in 1963 and later became the university’s first female rector in 1993. She was also instrumental in establishing a scholarship fund for UVA students. In addition to her academic achievements, Gilmore served as Virginia’s First Lady from 1998 to 2002 during her husband Jim Gilmore’s term as governor.
During her time as First Lady, Gilmore focused on issues related to education and literacy, advocating for programs that would benefit Virginia’s youth. She was a passionate supporter of public education and worked to improve educational opportunities for all Virginians.
