Ukrainian authorities have issued an urgent order for families with children to evacuate the eastern city of Pokrovsk as Russian forces advance in the Donetsk region. The capture of Pokrovsk could compromise Ukraine’s defensive abilities and supply routes. In response to the pressure on the eastern front, Ukraine launched an incursion into Russia’s Kursk region to create a buffer zone against further attacks.
The ongoing Russian onslaught in the Donetsk region has cost the country heavily in troops and armor, but the gradual progress has forced Ukrainian defenders to pull back. Russia aims to control all parts of Donetsk and neighboring Luhansk in the Donbas region. The recent capture of the town of Zalizne by Russian forces has further escalated tensions in the region.
The Institute for the Study of War reported that Russian forces have been advancing at a rate of two square kilometers per day in the Pokrovsk region over the past six months. Ukrainian officials are working to provide logistical details for the evacuation of residents, offering shelter in western Ukraine.
The situation in Pokrovsk remains tense as residents have just two weeks to evacuate safely. Russian forces are also putting pressure on the nearby town of Toretsk, which could serve as a gateway for further advances. As the conflict escalates, the international community is closely monitoring the situation and seeking ways to support the people of Ukraine during this difficult time.
