Live: Fifty Republican veterans in Congress accuse Tim Walz of deception regarding military service prior to his DNC address | Democratic National Convention 2024

A group of 50 Republican lawmakers who are military veterans have accused Democratic vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz of lying about his military service in the Army National Guard. In a letter shared with Politico, they claim that Walz misrepresented his service and call on him to come clean. The letter states that there is no honor in lying about one’s military service and accuses Walz of violating the trust of his fellow service members. Walz’s spokesperson pointed to statements from Democratic military veteran members of Congress defending him and an open letter of support from 1,000 military veterans.

GOP lawmaker JD Vance has also accused Walz of lying about his family’s experience with in vitro fertilization, a topic Walz has discussed on the campaign trail. Walz’s wife clarified that they went through a different process known as intrauterine insemination.

Walz, who served in the Army National Guard for 24 years, has also faced accusations of leaving the service in 2005 to avoid deployment to Iraq. However, there is no evidence to support this claim, and neither Walz nor Vance have combat experience.

These accusations come during an election season where the economy is a top priority for voters. The US job market has shown to be weaker than initially thought, prompting the Federal Reserve to consider cutting interest rates. Walz has had a more favorable response from American adults compared to Vance, according to polling data.
