Electric car manufacturer Tesla has announced a recall of 9,100 Model X SUVs in the US due to an issue with the roof trim that could potentially detach. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration flagged the problem as a road hazard that could increase the risk of a crash.
The recall affects Model X vehicles from the 2016 model year, and Tesla has stated that a change in the production process was made in July 2016 to prevent similar issues in later models. The company will conduct tests to ensure proper adhesion of the roof trim and will reattach any pieces as necessary at no cost to the owners.
Tesla has been investigating reports of problems with vehicles that underwent the 2020 recall remedy and found that it was not robust enough to detect potential issues with the roof trim. Despite around 170 related reports and claims, the company stated that there have been no crashes or injuries associated with the recall problem.
This recall is a rare physical one for Tesla, as the company typically addresses issues through software updates. In the first half of 2022, Tesla ranks second in the US for vehicle recalls behind Ford Motor. This latest recall follows a previous recall of the Cybertruck, making it the fourth time that model has been subject to a recall.
