The Philadelphia Eagles made a roster move on Monday by releasing former West Virginia quarterback, Will Grier. Grier was signed by the Eagles in August as a free agent but failed to make the final roster cut. The 26-year-old quarterback was not able to secure a backup role behind Jalen Hurts during preseason games.
Grier was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft but struggled to find consistent playing time. He was eventually waived by the Panthers in May and signed with the Eagles shortly after.
Despite having a strong college career at West Virginia, where he passed for over 7,000 yards and 71 touchdowns in just two seasons, Grier has not been able to translate that success to the NFL level. In his limited playing time with the Panthers, Grier threw for just 228 yards and four interceptions in six games.
The decision to release Grier is not surprising given the Eagles’ depth at the quarterback position. With Hurts firmly entrenched as the starter and veteran Joe Flacco serving as the primary backup, there was simply no room for Grier on the roster. The Eagles also have second-year quarterback Jamie Newman on the practice squad, further diminishing Grier’s chances of making the team.
It remains to be seen what Grier’s next move will be, but he will likely look to catch on with another NFL team or potentially explore opportunities in the Canadian Football League or XFL. Despite his struggles in the NFL, Grier still has potential and could benefit from a change of scenery.
