Ukraine has issued a warning to Belarus regarding the concentration of armed forces and weaponry along their shared border. The Ukrainian foreign ministry stated that any violation of its state border by Belarus will be met with all necessary measures to exercise the right to self-defense guaranteed by the UN Charter. This includes targeting troop concentrations, military facilities, and supply routes in Belarus. The presence of former Wagner PMC troops in the area was also noted.
The military exercises in the border area are seen as a threat to global security due to the proximity to the Chernobyl Nuclear Power plant, the site of the world’s worst nuclear disaster. Ukraine has urged Minsk to withdraw forces from the border to a distance greater than the firing range of Belarusian systems.
The warning comes in the context of Belarus allowing Russian troops to use its territory as a launchpad for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The two countries share a 1,084 km-long border, and any provocative actions by Belarus will not be tolerated by Ukraine. The situation remains tense as both countries monitor each other’s movements along the border.
