A recent report published by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) highlights the dire situation facing tree species around the world, with over one-third of species at risk of extinction. The report, which assessed over 47,000 species, found that more than 16,000 tree species are in danger of disappearing due to factors like deforestation, climate change, and human expansion.
The extinction risk is particularly high on islands and in South America, where rapid urban development and agriculture are threatening tree populations. The report warns that even in areas like the Amazon jungle, many tree species remain undiscovered and are likely at risk of extinction once they are identified.
The IUCN is calling for urgent action to protect and restore forests, including tree planting initiatives and the conservation of endangered species through seed banks and botanical gardens. The organization stresses the importance of trees in supporting ecosystems and the millions of people who rely on them for their livelihoods.
The publication of the report coincides with the United Nations COP16 summit on biodiversity, where world leaders are discussing the urgent need to increase funding for nature conservation. The UN Environment Programme estimates that annual spending on nature needs to more than double by 2030 to prevent further losses and meet climate goals.
