Bike and Walk Arlington Promote Safety for Nighttime Travelers as Daylight Saving Time Ends
ARLINGTON, Va. – As daylight saving time draws to a close, Bike Arlington and Walk Arlington are actively working to enhance the safety of cyclists and pedestrians after dark. To counter the challenges posed by reduced daylight, these organizations are hosting "Lighten Up, Arlington!" events, where they will distribute free bike lights, reflective vests, and other safety gear.
The upcoming Lighten Up events are scheduled as follows:
- Tuesday, October 29, from 4-6 PM at Custis Trail, near the Bikeometer bike counter (Langston Blvd & N. Lynn St.)
- Wednesday, October 30, from 4-6 PM at National Landing Water Park, near Mount Vernon Trail (1601 Crystal Drive)
- Friday, November 1, from 4-6 PM at Columbia Pike, near Washington & Old Dominion Trail.
Participation is open to all, and no prior registration is needed. For more details, interested individuals can visit the organizations’ websites at bikearlington.com and walkarlington.com.
In light of the end of daylight saving time, set for 2 a.m. local time on Sunday, November 3, residents are reminded to adjust their clocks back one hour. This transition will shift the standard time until March 9, when the clocks will "spring forward" again. Health research indicates that the springtime change may negatively impact sleep patterns, leading to an increase in heart attacks and strokes. To mitigate these effects, experts recommend gradually adjusting bedtime and increasing exposure to sunlight, which can help reset circadian rhythms and promote better sleep.
Bike Arlington and Walk Arlington’s initiatives aim to improve nighttime visibility, ensuring safer commuting for all in the community as the seasons change.
