Hargrove Receives ACC Defensive Player of the Week Recognition

Lauren Hargrove Named ACC Defensive Player of the Week for Second Time

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Virginia Tech’s Lauren Hargrove has earned the ACC Defensive Player of the Week title for the second time this season, following a standout performance as goalkeeper. The Richmond, Va. native excelled during two key matches, helping the Hokies secure impressive results.

Hargrove recorded two shutouts, most notably making six saves in Virginia Tech’s 2-0 victory over No. 7 Notre Dame, marking the program’s first Top 10 road win since 2012. This match was particularly significant, as the Fighting Irish boasted the seventh-best scoring offense in the nation. The victory represents the Hokies’ third consecutive shutout and their tenth of the season.

Additionally, Hargrove played a pivotal role in the team’s match against NC State, where she contributed to another shutout. Over the week, she maintained a perfect save percentage of 1.000 and a Goals Against Average (GAA) of 0.00, totaling seven saves across both games.

This isn’t Hargrove’s first accolade of the season; she previously claimed the ACC Defensive Player of the Week honor on September 17 after achieving an impressive 13 saves and a shutout over two contests. Her recognition marks a significant milestone as she becomes the first Hokie player to receive the award twice in a single season since Mandy Haught accomplished the feat in 2019.

Currently ranked No. 19, the Hokies (11-3-3, 6-1-2 ACC) will host their final match of the season against No. 24 Virginia (11-5, 4-5 ACC) on Thursday, October 31, at 8 p.m. The game will be broadcasted on ACCN, promising a thrilling conclusion to the season.
