Press Article: Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Minister James A. "Jimmy" Bennett
Virginia Beach, VA – James A. "Jimmy" Bennett, a cherished member of the local community and senior minister at Avalon Church of Christ, passed away on October 27, 2024, at the age of 80. Born on September 2, 1944, in Danville, VA, he was the son of the late Calvin Bennett, Sr. and Phyllis Moore Bennett.
A 1962 graduate of Douglas Freeman High School in Richmond, VA, Bennett went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree from Mid-Atlantic Christian University in 1966. His ministry at Avalon Church of Christ spanned an impressive 42 years, where he dedicated his life to serving others, guiding countless parishioners in their spiritual journeys. His leadership extended beyond his church; he served on the boards of influential Christian organizations, including Mid-Atlantic Christian University and Good News Productions International, and contributed to the Continuation Committee of the North American Christian Convention.
Jimmy is survived by his devoted wife of 58 years, Shelby Jean Bennett, and their son, Jeff, along with his wife Lisa, and two granddaughters, Madison and Macy. He is also remembered by his siblings, Carol Motley and William C. Bennett Jr., and sister-in-law Ruth Jones Headen.
The Bennett family will welcome friends and loved ones at Graham Funeral Home on Thursday, October 31, 2024, from 5 to 7 PM. A celebration of his life is scheduled for Friday, November 1, 2024, at 11 AM at Avalon Church of Christ, followed by interment at Oak Grove Christian Church Cemetery in Chatham, VA.
