Roane County High School Program Cultivates Future Leaders
Roane County, W.Va. – The West Virginia Future Leaders Program (FLP) at Roane County High School is empowering students with vital life skills, driven by an initiative from the West Virginia Air National Guard. Staff Sgt. Tyler Caruthers, who oversees the program, emphasizes its mission to foster good citizenship among students.
"We’re trying to teach these kids to be leaders in their community, in their state, and in their country," Caruthers explained. Launched two years ago, the FLP dispels the myth that it caters only to those pursuing military careers. Instead, it offers a structured curriculum with multiple levels of instruction.
Currently, Caruthers teaches FLP1 and FLP2, with plans to introduce FLP3 next year and FLP4 the year after. The program includes key coursework focusing on financial responsibility, medical training, and emergency preparedness. Caruthers frequently engages students with thought-provoking questions, such as "How can you be a role model in your community?" These discussions help students apply their learned skills in real-world contexts.
The impact of the program is evident, with Caruthers expressing immense pride in the students. "They’re really impressing me, and I was blessed to get a good group of kids," he stated, highlighting the dedication and potential of the youth involved. The FLP not only shapes future leaders but also equips them to make meaningful contributions to society. As the program continues to grow, it aims to instill in students the confidence and responsibility needed to become active, engaged citizens.
