UK Publisher of Daily Mirror confronts 101 phone-hacking lawsuits | Global News

Mirror Group Newspapers, the publisher of the Daily Mirror, is currently facing 101 phone-hacking lawsuits in the UK. Public figures such as Kate Winslet, Sean Bean, and Gillian Anderson are among those who have brought legal action against the tabloid, along with the estate of late Australian cricketer Shane Warne. The lawsuits stem from alleged phone hacking and other unlawful information gathering that took place at MGN newspapers in the early 2000s.

Prince Harry, who recently won a substantial settlement from MGN after being targeted by their journalists, has vowed to continue his mission to hold the British press accountable. Despite MGN’s claim of victory when two other claimants’ cases were rejected, the publisher is still facing a significant number of lawsuits. A trial to determine whether a sample of the 101 cases was brought too late is set to take place in November 2025, with the hope that it will prompt settlements in the remaining cases.

MGN’s parent company, Reach, has been embroiled in litigation over phone-hacking claims for over a decade. The ruling in Prince Harry’s case set a precedent for cases brought after October 2020, with the likelihood of dismissal unless exceptional circumstances apply. The ongoing legal battles highlight the ongoing scrutiny and legal challenges faced by tabloid newspapers in the UK.
