Virginia Tech Athletics Achieves Impressive Graduation Success Rate
BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech Athletics has once again demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence, achieving a remarkable Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 90%, according to the NCAA’s recent report. This marks the ninth consecutive year the department has maintained a GSR of at least 90%, affirming its dedication to fostering student-athlete success.
The NCAA’s GSR metric, introduced as part of the organization’s 2003 academic reform initiative, is designed to more accurately reflect the academic outcomes of student-athletes. Unlike the federal graduation rate, the GSR does not penalize institutions for players who transfer in good academic standing and includes mid-year enrollees. Importantly, it allows a six-year timeframe for student-athletes to complete their degrees, with this year’s rate calculated from those who enrolled between 2014 and 2017.
Nine Virginia Tech sports achieved a perfect GSR of 100%. These include men’s basketball, women’s cross country/track and field, women’s golf, lacrosse, men’s swimming and diving, softball, women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, and women’s tennis, the latter consistently scoring 100% since the metric’s inception.
In addition, three other programs – women’s basketball (92%), women’s soccer (96%), and volleyball (91%) – also recorded GSRs above 90%. Meanwhile, the men’s cross country/track and field team registered 88%, followed by baseball at 85%, men’s golf at 83%, wrestling at 81%, men’s soccer at 80%, and football at 78%.
