Former University of Virginia walk-on Christopher Darnell Jones, 25, pleaded guilty to the triple-murder of three Virginia football players in 2022. Jones shot Devin Chandler, Lavel Davis Jr., and D’Sean Perry on a charter bus after their class trip, also injuring running back Mike Hollins and student Marlee Morgan. No motive was given, but it was reported that Jones targeted specific victims. Jones was not a member of the football team at the time. Jones was under the university’s threat-assessment team’s radar for erratic behavior prior to the shooting. In a separate development, Hollins remarkably returned to the field for Virginia in 2023 after recovering from his injuries. He had a successful season, winning the Brian Piccolo Award for courage in the ACC. Hollins later became a graduate assistant at Virginia. The university reached a $9 million settlement with the victims, providing $2 million to each of the slain players’ families, and $3 million to Hollins and Morgan. Jones will be sentenced on Feb. 4, 2025, after pleading guilty to first-degree murder and other charges, sparing a jury trial in January 2025. Hollins’ comeback story and achievements on the field following the tragic incident serve as a tale of resilience and perseverance in the face of adversity.
