Four students charged with felony criminal mischief

Several University of Rochester students, faculty, and supporters attended the arraignment of four UR students charged with second-degree criminal mischief for allegedly posting “Wanted” posters on campus. The posters accused faculty of complicity in Gaza war crimes, leading to charges from UR’s Department of Public Safety. The Jewish organization Hillel condemned the posters as anti-Semitic, while Jewish Voice for Peace saw them as linked to support for Israel’s actions in the Middle East. The four students pleaded not guilty in court and were released on their own recognizance while facing possible prison time and fines.

The criminal charges stem from damage to school property caused by superglue and aerosol on chalkboards, whiteboards, and walls, leading to costs exceeding $6,000. University President Sarah Mangelsdorf stated that the students would face the school’s conduct procedures in addition to the legal process. The incident has created fear among faculty and students on campus, with concerns about potential violence and a divided response to the posters.

Supporters of the accused students, including faculty members and a Rochester City Council member, criticized the university’s handling of the situation and emphasized the need for unity and support for social justice. One student, who is Palestinian, expressed disappointment in the lack of consequences for harassment related to her identity. Another student offered Challah to show solidarity with the accused, highlighting the dispute over the nature of the posters and the university’s response. The ongoing case raises questions about campus safety, freedom of expression, and accountability for actions that damage university property.
