Thai woman Sararat Rangsiwuthaporn has been sentenced to death for allegedly being one of the country’s most prolific serial killers, accused of poisoning her friend with cyanide. This is just the first of 14 murder trials she is facing for a series of cyanide poisonings dating back to 2015.
Sararat, described as an online gambling addict, is accused of swindling large sums of money from her victims before killing them to fund her gambling habit. She borrowed money from her victims and later killed them with cyanide to cover her debts. In total, she is believed to have lured 15 people to consume poisoned capsules, with only one surviving.
The court in Bangkok convicted Sararat for the murder of her friend, Siriporn Khanwong, who died after collapsing following a Buddhist ritual near Bangkok in April 2022. Traces of cyanide were found in her body. Sararat faces charges for 13 additional murders and has been linked to around 80 criminal offenses in total.
Sararat’s ex-husband, a police lieutenant-colonel, and her former lawyer have also been sentenced for their involvement in Siriporn’s murder. The case has shocked the nation, with authorities describing Sararat as a dangerous criminal who targeted vulnerable individuals for financial gain.
Thailand has seen high-profile poisoning cases in the past, but Sararat’s alleged crimes stand out for their scale and severity. The court’s decision has been welcomed by the victims’ families, providing a sense of closure and justice for their loved ones who fell victim to Sararat’s deadly schemes.
