WVU Wrestling Claims Victorious Road Win Against Appalachian State
BOONE, N.C. – The No. 19 West Virginia University wrestling team celebrated a commanding 37-8 victory over Appalachian State on Friday night at Varsity Gym. This match marked the second all-time meeting between the Mountaineers.
In a thrilling start, senior Jett Strickenberger showcased grit at 133 pounds, overcoming a 7-1 deficit to secure an 11-8 sudden victory in overtime. Strickenberger’s comeback, powered by two takedowns in the final moments, set a competitive tone for the dual. Redshirt junior Jordan Titus followed suit with a dominant 17-2 technical fall at 141 pounds, solidifying WVU’s early advantage.
Despite Appalachian State’s technical fall at 149 pounds, West Virginia rebounded strongly with consecutive pins from redshirt freshman Sasha Gavronsky at 157 and fifth-year senior Peyton Hall at 165, extending their lead to 15 points heading into halftime.
The Mountaineers continued their momentum after the break, winning four of the last five bouts. Notable performances included major decisions by redshirt senior Dennis Robin at 184 pounds and fifth-year senior Michael Wolfgram at heavyweight, along with a pin from redshirt junior Jace Schafer at 125 pounds.
This match was significant not only for the win but also for marking the dual debuts of Gavronsky, redshirt junior Blake Boyers, and true freshman Rune Lawrence, contributing to the team’s future potential.
Looking forward, the Mountaineers will compete next at the Cliff Keen Invitational, taking place on December 6-7 in Las Vegas, which will be streamed live on FloWrestling.
