President-elect Donald Trump is considering appointing Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, as a special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Grenell, who previously served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and as acting director of national intelligence, would play a key role in Trump’s efforts to end the war. While there is currently no dedicated special envoy for the conflict, Trump is thinking of creating the role. However, he may ultimately decide not to do so and choose someone else for the position. Grenell’s past statements, such as advocating for autonomous zones and expressing reluctance for Ukraine to join NATO, could concern leaders in Ukraine. Nevertheless, Grenell’s supporters highlight his extensive diplomatic experience and knowledge of European affairs. Trump’s transition team declined to comment on the potential appointment, and Grenell has not yet responded to requests for comment. Despite campaigning for Trump and being considered as a potential secretary of state, Grenell was ultimately passed over for Republican U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, a decision that surprised and disappointed some of his close allies. Trump has vowed to swiftly end the conflict in Ukraine, although specifics on his plans remain unclear.
