Daniel Andreas San Diego, an alleged animal-rights extremist wanted for the bombing of a biotechnology firm in California, has been arrested in the United Kingdom. San Diego was added to the most wanted terrorist list in 2009 for bombings targeting companies believed to be working with Huntingdon Life Sciences, a research company that had been criticized by animal rights activists for its use of animal testing.
The bombings, which occurred in 2003, targeted the Chiron Life Science Center in Emeryville and another company in Pleasanton, California. San Diego fled the country shortly after the bombings and was indicted in 2004 for his involvement. The FBI stated that San Diego openly expressed extreme views advocating violence to further the goals of the animal rights movement.
The Revolutionary Cells claimed responsibility for the attacks, citing the targeted firms’ alleged ties to Huntingdon Life Sciences. No injuries or fatalities were reported in the bombings, but additional violence was threatened if companies did not sever ties with the research company.
San Diego is charged with damaging a building with explosives and owning an explosive to commit a crime. It is unclear when he will be extradited to the U.S. or if additional charges will be filed. San Diego was also tied to the international animal rights group Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty. The pharmaceutical company involved in the case, now known as Inotiv, faced scrutiny after a USDA inspection report revealed numerous puppy deaths at its Virginia facility.
