Sam Benastick, a hiker who went missing in mid-October in the freezing Canadian wilderness, was found alive earlier this week. He was reported missing on Oct. 19 and was discovered on the Redfern Lake trail by two men on their way to work. Benastick survived by staying in his car for a couple of days, camping out on a mountainside for 10-15 days, and building a shelter in a dried-out creek bed for the remainder of the time.
His 10-day trip turned into a 50-day ordeal, and over 100 local volunteers participated in the search for him. Benastick was found with frostbite and smoke inhalation, wrapped in his sleeping bag with two sticks to help him walk. Redfern-Keily Park, where he went missing, is a remote area in British Columbia known for its glaciers, waterfalls, meadows, and wildlife like grizzly bears, wolves, lynx, and bison.
Despite the harsh weather conditions in the area, Benastick managed to survive and was eventually rescued. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police expressed relief at finding him alive after such a long period of being missing. This miraculous outcome was a relief to everyone involved in the search and rescue efforts for Benastick.
