The head of the UK’s Secret Intelligence Service, known as MI6, Richard Moore, warned on Friday of Russia’s “staggeringly reckless campaign” of sabotage in Europe. He stated that if Putin were to reduce Ukraine to a vassal state, he would not stop there, posing a threat to British, French, European, and transatlantic security. Moore also highlighted the growing threat of Russian nuclear sabre-rattling to scare countries from supporting Ukraine.
Moore’s speech aimed to rally European allies and incoming US administration officials about the importance of supporting Ukraine. Western intelligence officials have warned of increasing Russian sabotage actions across the Euro-Atlantic area. NATO and western intelligence services have pointed out that Russia is behind hostile activities like cyber-attacks and arson.
The UK’s domestic spy chief recently mentioned Russia’s GRU military intelligence service seeking to cause “mayhem” across the UK and Europe. Sources familiar with US intelligence suggested that Russia might expand its sabotage campaign against European targets to pressure the west over its support for Kyiv.
Moore emphasized the importance of continued cooperation between the UK and the US for security. He mentioned successful collaboration with the first Trump administration and expressed readiness to work together again. Russia’s recent drone attacks on Ukraine injuring people and damaging buildings have raised concerns, further highlighting the need for international support for Kyiv. Vladimir Putin’s threats to Ukraine and escalating conflict show the urgency of backing the Ukrainian people against Russian aggression.
