A bipartisan coalition of state leaders in Virginia is pushing for more improvements in U.S. Postal Service operations to ensure reliable mail delivery for residents. Virginia ranked at the bottom for on-time mail delivery in October 2023, but reforms have helped raise the state’s rankings. The Delivering for America plan, introduced in 2021, aimed to make the Postal Service financially stable and competitive. However, issues arose during the transition to the new processing network, with one of the first centers located in Sandston, Virginia experiencing significant problems.
State lawmakers, including U.S. Rep. Jennifer McClellan, have been advocating for better transparency and communication from the Postal Service. The bipartisan coalition continues to hold the Postal Service accountable for poor service and works towards restoring reliable mail service for all Virginians. Despite improvements in on-time delivery, more work is needed to achieve the level of mail service that residents deserve.
Efforts to privatize the Postal Service under the second Trump administration are considered unlikely, with strong opposition from members of the congressional delegation. Privatization could have detrimental effects on those who heavily rely on the Postal Service, including disabled individuals, older adults, and residents in rural areas. U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine has also been involved in improving on-time mail delivery in Virginia and minimizing disruptions. A strong Postal Service is seen as a bipartisan issue, with many opposing efforts to privatize the service.
