Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee for Secretary of Defence, faces accusations of mistreating women and lacking moral character. In a scathing email, his mother, Penelope Hegseth, called him an abuser of women and criticised him for his treatment of his ex-wife, Samantha. Penelope later sent an apologetic follow-up, attributing her initial tone to emotional circumstances surrounding her son’s divorce. Hegseth, a former Fox News contributor and war veteran, has also been accused of infidelity and facing a rape complaint in 2017. He has denied the accusation, stating it was a false claim by a woman he had a consensual relationship with. The email’s release comes as Hegseth faces Senate confirmation hearings, where his character will be scrutinised. A spokesperson for Trump accused The New York Times of releasing an out-of-context snippet and highlighted Penelope’s apology for the message. Hegseth’s divorce from Samantha, finalised in 2019, included disputes over parenting time and derogatory texts he later regretted. As the accusations against him continue to attract attention, Hegseth remains under intense scrutiny as he awaits confirmation for the Secretary of Defence position.
