The Virginia Capitol Foundation has issued a new Christmas ornament honoring the Virginians who served as president of the United States, featuring George Washington’s statue. French sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon’s masterpiece, which has stood in the Virginia State Capitol since 1796, is illustrated in the 13th annual holiday ornament. The foundation’s mission is to support the ongoing restoration, preservation, and interpretation of the Capitol building designed by Thomas Jefferson.
The ornament, a rediscovered gift from the Daughters of the American Revolution, was made in 2010 to raise money for the restoration of the historic Bell Tower. Karen LaForge, the foundation’s executive director, found the original ornaments and began selling them in September. The foundation has previously honored various features of the Capitol and Capitol Square in its ornaments, including the Bell Tower, the Old City Hall, and the Executive Mansion.
The Houdon statue of George Washington is considered the most accurate depiction of him, as Houdon took detailed measurements from the future president himself. The ornament series will honor each of the eight Virginia-born presidents, including Jefferson and James Madison. LaForge emphasized that these ornaments are not only a piece of Virginia history but also a piece of American history.
The foundation’s efforts to preserve and celebrate the rich history of the Virginia State Capitol continue through the sale of these beautifully crafted holiday ornaments.
