Mysterious drones have been reported flying over various parts of New Jersey, prompting an investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies and the FBI in Newark. While images and footage of the drones have circulated online, officials have stated that there is no known threat to public safety. Reports of drone sightings have come from counties such as Morris, Somerset, Warren, and Sussex.
The Morris County Prosecutor’s Office first announced sightings in November, with patrolmen spotting the drones on Nov. 18. The FAA initially did not find evidence of drone activity but shared information with federal security partners. Both the FAA and FBI are now involved in the investigation, with the FBI noting reports of drones flying along the Raritan River.
Local resident Jonelle Ferentinos reported seeing the drones near the Boonton Reservoir in Parsippany while walking her dog at night. The FBI is asking anyone who sees drones to report it by calling a hotline or submitting tips online.
Multiple agencies, including local sheriff’s departments, emergency management offices, police departments, the New Jersey State Police, and the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, are working together to address the drone sightings. The FAA has issued flight restrictions in certain areas to prevent unauthorized drone operations, with fines and penalties for operators conducting unsafe operations.
