Iowa pork plant investigation uncovers contractor hiring 11 children

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa recently approved a consent order and judgment with Qvest LLC, a sanitation contractor for Seaboard Triumph Foods in Sioux City, for employing children doing dangerous work at a pork processing plant. Qvest must pay $171,919 in penalties, implement policies to prevent the employment of children, and establish a process for reporting concerns about illegal child labor. Seaboard Triumph Foods denied any involvement and stated they have not worked with Qvest for over a year. They emphasized their commitment to safety, ethical practices, and compliance with regulations.

This incident is not the first involving child labor in meat processing facilities. Earlier this year, a separate company was fined for hiring children to clean equipment at Seaboard Triumph, prompting the cancellation of their contract. JBS USA also faced fines for employing children at meatpacking plants. The U.S. Department of Labor is actively seeking to end illegal child labor in workplaces, investigating violations and holding employers accountable.

In fiscal year 2024, the DOL conducted 736 investigations uncovering child labor violations affecting over 4,000 children and assessing more than $15.1 million in penalties. Employers are urged to comply with federal child labor laws and ensure that minors are not engaged in dangerous work. The issue of fraudulent identification documents enabling minors to obtain jobs is a concern, and companies are encouraged to verify the age and eligibility of their employees.
