Police report UnitedHealthcare CEO killed in targeted attack in New York

Brian Thompson, the head of UnitedHealthcare, a major American health insurance company, was shot dead in a targeted attack in New York City. The gunman opened fire on Thompson as he arrived at the Hilton hotel for the company’s annual investors conference. The shooter escaped on an electric Citi Bike after the gun initially malfunctioned. Thompson, 50, was pronounced dead shortly after the incident.

UnitedHealth is the largest U.S. health insurer and has been dealing with the aftermath of a data hack in one of its units, disrupting medical care for patients. The conference was canceled following the shooting, and the company expressed condolences to Thompson’s family.

Police are still investigating the motive behind the attack and are working with Citi Bike to track the shooter’s movements. The shooting did not disrupt the annual Christmas tree lighting at Rockefeller Center, scheduled to take place that evening.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed shock and sadness over Thompson’s death, sending prayers to his family and the UnitedHealthcare team. UnitedHealthcare serves millions of Americans through various health insurance programs.

The shooting took place in a busy area of Manhattan, and police are analyzing security footage and evidence to identify the assailant. The incident has shocked the business and healthcare community in Minnesota, where Thompson was a highly respected colleague and friend.
