WVU Athletic Director, Wren Baker, is on the hunt for a new football coach following Neal Brown’s departure. Baker has put his phone on privacy mode until the search is complete and is keeping details discreet to avoid tipping his hand. He mentioned that the candidate pool is wide open and not limited to just head coaches or coordinators. Baker emphasized the importance of evaluating candidates based on their ability to construct rosters, manage revenue, and navigate salary considerations, referring to this process as “capology.”
Despite the upcoming signing day, transfer portal window opening, and potential bowl game appearance for WVU, Baker remains focused on finding the best person for the job. He has appointed interim coaches to handle on-field and non-football activities leading up to the bowl game and reassured current staff members of fair treatment during the transition period.
Baker believes the WVU coaching position is attractive due to the passionate fan base and the opportunities presented by the wide-open Big 12 Conference. He aims to find a candidate who will embrace the unique challenges and advantages of the program, with a focus on increasing revenue and public addressing resource disparities in the future.
Baker emphasized the importance of finding someone who has a desire to embrace the culture of West Virginia and understand the significant role the football coach plays in the state. Despite the financial obligations to the outgoing staff, Baker is committed to offering a competitive compensation package to the new hire. He will be utilizing Parker Search to assist with the recruitment process.
