Get ready for the upcoming rare December 2024 full moon!

This weekend will mark the appearance of the cold moon, the final full moon of the year, on Sunday, Dec. 15. However, the moon will still appear full on both Saturday and Monday. This month’s full moon will be a lunar rarity as it will rise and set at its most extreme northerly points on the horizon, occurring once every 18.6 years during the major lunar standstill. This phenomenon is a result of the moon’s inclined orbit over its cycle.

The full moon will reach peak illumination on Dec. 15 at 4:02 a.m. EST, earning the name cold moon due to the frigid conditions of December. Additionally, it is also known as the long night moon, as it nears the winter solstice, which marks the longest night of the year on December 21. The first full moon of 2025, the wolf moon, will rise on January 13.

This unique occurrence is caused by the moon’s path differing from that of the sun, resulting in its rising and setting positions on the horizon constantly changing. The observance of the moon rising as far north as possible is a rare sight and an event not to be missed this weekend.
