Huntington Ingalls names Arkansas, a Virginia-class submarine, at christening ceremony

Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) recently christened the Virginia-class submarine Arkansas (SSN 800) at their Newport News Shipbuilding division. This marks the 27th Virginia-class submarine and the 13th one built and delivered by Newport News. The sponsors of the submarine are six members of the Little Rock Nine, the group of African American students who integrated Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. Carlotta Walls LaNier, one of the sponsors, broke a bottle of American sparkling wine across the submarine’s bow during the ceremony.

In her speech, LaNier praised the craftsmanship, attention to detail, and support for each other in the workplace by the shipbuilders, which made the christening of the submarine possible. Newport News Shipbuilding is one of the two shipyards capable of designing and building nuclear-powered submarines for the U.S. Navy.

The christening ceremony was a momentous occasion, honoring the history of the Little Rock Nine and showcasing the dedication and skill of the shipbuilders at Newport News Shipbuilding. This event further solidifies HII’s commitment to producing high-quality submarines for the U.S. Navy. The Arkansas submarine is a symbol of resilience, progress, and innovation in the field of naval defense, showcasing the collaboration between the Navy and industry partners.
