‘Rediscovered’ Great Lakes Shortnose Cisco fish found in Lake Superior

The Shortnose Cisco, a native Great Lakes whitefish thought extinct for nearly 40 years, has been rediscovered in Lake Superior, surprising scientists who had previously believed the fish to be extinct in the Great Lakes. The discovery was made during fish surveys in 2022, and marks the first time the fish has been seen by modern scientists on Lake Superior. The Shortnose Cisco belongs to a class of fish known as coregonines, which were once abundant in the Great Lakes but declined dramatically due to overfishing, invasive species, and habitat loss. Efforts are now being made to understand and restore the various coregonine species to help improve the overall health of the Great Lakes ecosystem. Researchers have also identified other coregonine species in Lake Superior, including Cisco, Bloater, and Kiyi, providing vindication to an early fishery researcher who had identified these species decades ago. Restoration efforts for coregonine species are underway in various parts of the Great Lakes, including Saginaw Bay and Lake Erie. These efforts aim to increase the stability and resilience of the Great Lakes ecosystem, as native fish species are seen as flexible and able to adapt to changing conditions. While some anglers may prefer efforts be focused on sports fish, the restoration of coregonine species complements the vital sports fishery and helps ensure the long-term health of the Great Lakes.
