The launch of the Virginia-class submarine Arkansas is on track for the second quarter of 2025.

The final Block IV Virginia-class submarine, Arkansas (SSN 800), is set to launch in the second quarter of 2025, with delivery expected 12 months after. This information was provided by Jason Ward, vice-president of Virginia-Class Submarine Construction for Newport News Shipbuilding, during an interview with Janes. Arkansas is the last submarine of its kind to be delivered by NNS, with the hull now complete and preparations underway for the crew to move aboard.

Despite delays in construction, attributed in part to the Covid-19 pandemic, efforts are being made to increase production to meet the needs of the US Navy and fulfill commitments under the AUKUS agreement with the UK and Australia. Commander Michael Huber, Arkansas commanding officer, is currently focused on crew training, starting with engineering. Ward emphasized the impact of Covid-19 on manufacturing, noting that all Virginia-class submarines are running behind schedule.

NNS and General Dynamics Electric Boat are working to accelerate submarine production to exceed two submarines per year. The launch of Arkansas marks a significant milestone in the Virginia-class submarine program, showcasing the ongoing commitment to naval defense and national security. Stay tuned for updates on the progress of Arkansas as it nears its completion and delivery in 2025.
