Fairfax County officials and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are addressing safety concerns at the intersection of Bauer Drive and Rolling Road in Springfield. Over the last five years, 21 out of 29 reported accidents at the intersection resulted from left-hand turns. The heavy traffic in the area, caused by nearby facilities such as a police station, post office, government center, shopping plaza, and high school, has prompted calls for improvements to enhance safety.
Pat Herrity, a Springfield board of supervisors member, expressed concern over the high number of accidents and the potential risks associated with banning left turns from Bauer Drive. VDOT’s proposal to implement this ban is being met with hesitation due to worries of increased danger from drivers attempting alternative routes through nearby properties.
While the intersection qualifies for a traffic light, funding and scheduling challenges have delayed its installation. In a meeting scheduled for Wednesday night, residents will have the opportunity to review VDOT’s proposal, provide feedback, and work towards developing a temporary solution while the traffic light plans progress. The hope is to have a safety strategy in place by spring for this problematic intersection.
