Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul’s office filed 10 additional felony charges against two attorneys and an aide who worked for former President Donald Trump. The charges are related to submitting false paperwork claiming that Trump won Wisconsin in the 2020 election. The individuals who were charged include Kenneth Chesebro, Jim Troupis, and Mike Roman. The charges allege forgery to defraud the Republican electors who cast their ballots for Trump, despite Joe Biden winning the state. The defendants are scheduled to appear in court in Madison to face the charges.
Troupis, in a recent interview, expressed concerns about the case against him and mentioned facing significant legal costs related to the civil case. He encouraged people to show up to the Dane County Courthouse for his court appearance. Each of the 11 charges against the defendants carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison and a $10,000 fine. The charges are part of a wider investigation involving fake electors schemes in several other states.
The charges stem from an incident in December 2020 when fake electors gathered in the state Capitol to submit paperwork falsely claiming that Trump had won Wisconsin. Troupis has filed several motions to dismiss the case, arguing that no crime was committed and that the case should be dismissed.
The hearing on the charges comes as Trump is set to return to office following his victory in the current presidential election. The fake electors settled a lawsuit last year, acknowledging that their actions were an attempt to overturn the election results.
