The Metro Richmond Zoo in Richmond, Va. recently announced the name of their new baby pygmy hippopotamus. After a worldwide online poll with over 100,000 votes from all 50 states and 165 countries, the cute calf has been named Poppy. The name was chosen in a nod to her mother, Iris, whose other two baby girls are named Violet and Petunia. The other name option, Hammie Mae, was not chosen. Baby Poppy was born on Christmas Eve to parents Iris and Corwin and weighed a healthy 15 pounds at birth. This is the third calf for the couple in the last four years. The zoo’s director, Jim Andelin, hopes that Poppy will help raise awareness about her species and others. Poppy made her official debut at the zoo on January 3rd, and visitors can now see her in person. This adorable addition to the Metro Richmond Zoo is sure to be a popular attraction for visitors of all ages.
