President Donald Trump announced that proposed tariffs on Canadian goods have been paused for 30 days, after Canadian leaders made efforts to secure the border. Trump had threatened 25% tariffs on all Canadian goods unless more was done to stop unauthorized migrants and fentanyl from entering the U.S. Following a call with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Trump decided to delay the tariffs.
Trudeau stated that Canada is investing $1.3 billion in reinforcing the border, with 10,000 personnel working on border protection. Additionally, Canada is appointing a “Fentanyl Czar” and designating drug cartels as terrorists. The country will also invest $200 million in a new intelligence program targeting organized crime and fentanyl.
On his platform Truth Social, Trump expressed satisfaction with the deal, emphasizing his responsibility to ensure the safety of all Americans. He also announced a similar pause in tariffs on Mexico after reaching an agreement with Mexican President Claudia Scheinbaum Pardo for increased border enforcement.
Overall, the pause in tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods comes as a result of efforts to address border security concerns and combat the flow of unauthorized migrants and drugs into the U.S. Both Canada and Mexico have committed to taking steps to strengthen border protection and tackle organized crime.
