West Virginia parents, Jeanne Kay Whitefeather and Donald Ray Lantz, are currently on trial for mistreating four of their five adopted children, all of whom are black. The couple faces several felony charges, including forced labor, civil rights violations, human trafficking, and gross child neglect.
The case came to light when neighbors reported seeing Lantz locking two teenagers in a shed on their property. Whitefeather claimed the shed was a “teenager hangout” and that the children had access to a key and were not locked in. However, the oldest daughter testified that she was unaware of the key’s whereabouts, contradicting Whitefeather’s claims.
The children were reportedly only given peanut butter sandwiches at scheduled times and were not allowed to eat outside those times, regardless of hunger. After the couple’s arrest, the children were placed under the care of Child Protective Services.
The pair adopted the siblings while living in Minnesota, later moving to a farm in Washington state before relocating to West Virginia in 2023. The oldest boy is currently receiving full-time care in a psychiatric facility.
The trial is ongoing, with both Whitefeather and Lantz facing serious allegations of mistreatment towards the children under their care.
